Injury Response Guide
The following injury and illness response procedures are listed to assist Pitt affiliates with quick injury and illness response in the event of an on-campus emergency. Please review the Injury reporting and treatment page for additional treatment and reporting details.

If you or someone else is experiencing a medical emergency, please call campus police at 412-624-2121 for immediate assistance. If off campus, please call 911.
Cuts and Puncture Wounds
- Wash injury with soap and water for several minutes.
- If available, use first aid kit or bandaging to contain injury as appropriate.
- Obtain medical attention by calling 412-624-2121.

Chemical Spill on Body
- Flood exposed area with running water from faucet, drench hose or emergency shower for at least 15 minutes.
- Immediately remove contaminated clothing and shoes.
- Obtain medical attention by calling 412-624-2121.
Chemical or Other Debris Splashed in Eye
- Immediately rinse eye with water continuously for 15 minutes. Use eyewash station if available.
- Hold eye open to ensure effective wash behind eyelids.
- Obtain medical attention by calling 412-624-2121.
Biological Spill on Body
- Remove contaminated clothing.
- Vigorously wash exposed area with soap and water.
- Obtain medical attention by calling 412-624-2121.
Clothing on Fire
- Roll on floor to smother flame; or drench with water; use emergency shower if available.
- Obtain medical attention by calling 412-624-2121.
Radiation Spill on Body
- Remove contaminated clothing.
- Wash exposed area with soap and cool water.
- Monitor area with appropriate survey instrument.
- Repeat wash if needed; do not abrade or irritate skin.
- Obtain medical attention by calling 412-624-2121.
- Report incident to Radiation Safety Office.
