Animal Associated Injuries
Medical Emergency: If the injury requires immediate medical attention, call 412-624-2121.
- Immediately wash and rinse the wound with soap and water. Apply pressure if necessary to control bleeding.
- If the injury involves mucous membranes (eye, nose and/or mouth), flush with water for 15 minutes at eyewash station or other potable water source.
- Notify and/or request assistance from co-workers.
- Report the incident to your immediate supervisor. The supervisor will notify the medical treatment facility indicated below.
- Proceed to a designated medical treatment facility.
Non-Human Primate Associated Injuries
- Locate and open an NHP Exposure Kit.
- Wash the wound immediately and continuously for 15 minutes with the scrub brush provided in the NHP Exposure Kit. Flush and rinse the wound well.
- For mucous membrane exposure (eye, nose, or mouth), continuously flush the mucous membrane area for 15 minutes using the eyewash station.
- Notify your supervisor and the DLAR facility veterinarian as soon as possible, but do not delay your medical care. Inform the veterinary staff which NHP(s) were involved in the injury or exposure.
- Take a copy of the NHP Exposure Memo with you and proceed to a designated medical treatment facility.
