Lithium-ion (Li-ion) batteries are widely used in phones, laptops, and other electronics. While generally safe, they can overheat, catch fire, or explode if damaged or misused.

In Case of Emergency
- Smoke or Fire: Evacuate space immediately, close doors behind you, activate the pull station, and call Pitt Police (412) 624-2121 or 911. Do not attempt to pick up or move a burning battery.
- Exposure to battery chemicals:
- Eyes → flush with water for 15 minutes and seek medical help.
- Skin → rinse with cool water and remove contaminated clothing.
- Inhalation → move to fresh air immediately.
Use & Charging
- Use only manufacturer-approved chargers and cables.
- Operation, storage and recharging of recreational type vehicles with lithium-ion/LiPo batteries (hoover boards, skateboards, scooters), remote controlled vehicles or devices, are not permitted inside university buildings.
- Plug directly into a wall outlet—avoid extension cords or power strips.
- Don’t leave devices charging unattended or overnight.
- Stop using immediately if a battery overheats, swells, leaks, or gives off an unusual odor.
Storage & Handling
- Store in a cool, dry place away from heat sources and flammable items.
- Do not crush, puncture, disassemble, or expose batteries to water.
- Inspect batteries regularly for signs of wear or damage.
Disposal
- Never throw batteries in the trash or recycling bin.
- Use a designated battery recycling or hazardous waste drop-off location.
