Notice of Election to Provide Heart and Lung Benefits to Campus Police
Effective January 1, 2026
The University of Pittsburgh – of the Commonwealth System of Higher Education has elected to participate in the Pennsylvania Enforcement Officer Disability Benefits Law (“Heart and Lung Act”), which provides sworn campus police officers with certain benefits in the event of a qualifying injury in the line of duty. For unionized officers, the policies and procedures related to Heart and Lung Act benefits, including the procedures for submitting claims, claim evaluation, and appeals, are set forth in the Department’s collective bargaining agreement(s). Non-unionized officers should refer to the University of Pittsburgh Police Department Heart and Lung Procedures Policy.
